Joel Covelman

Joel D. Covelman heads the Firm’s Intellectual Property Services Group. He litigates patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, unfair competition, false advertising and domain name cases in court, and in the U.S. International Trade Commission. He assists clients with acquisition and licensing of intellectual property. Mr. Covelman also handles privacy, publicity, and First Amendment cases.
Mr. Covelman represents individual inventors, start-up companies, and established businesses, including Fortune 500 companies. He works with clients to help identify and protect intellectual property assets. He also provides advice on all aspects of protecting trade secrets, including counseling on reasonable measures to protect business secrets and preparation of non-disclosure agreements with suppliers, customers and business partners.
He handles Internet domain name disputes and other aspects of cyber-law. In addition, he advises clients about insurance coverage for intellectual property infringement, and litigates insurance coverage disputes arising out of intellectual property infringement.
Finally, Mr. Covelman assists clients with acquisition of intellectual property and exploitation of their own intellectual property. He assists clients with contract review and drafting, and advice on negotiation tactics and strategies. He also advises clients about purchasing intellectual property from a foreclosing creditor or from a bankruptcy proceeding; and he assists our corporate practitioners in assuring that intellectual property rights are correctly secured and transferred in corporate financing, mergers and acquisitions.
